Momoco’s title sequence for NBC’s flagship drama.
Streams of blood, (or chianti?) churn and entwine together forming the heads of the characters, at first you are innocently watching these beautiful ruby red globules swilling around, then it suddenly occurs to you that this is probably not as innocent as it seems! I think this is a really subtle piece of design as they have managed to convey the idea of lots of bloodshed without making it gory in anyway – It reminds me of when I first saw Marc Quinn’s cast of his own head made from his own blood - I was veering between feeling fine about it to being a bit uneasy.
I had a quick chat with Tom Bromwich at momoco to find out a bit more about this sequence ”We commissioned all three actors (Mads Mikkelson, Laurence Fishburne and Hugh Dancy) to have their heads scanned in 3D for the sequence. Once we had their scans as 3D information we used Real Flow with 3DS Max and After Effects to create the sequence. You may have noticed that the first to heads have their eyes closed, and the final one, Hannibal, is the only one with his eyes open - the only one in total control.”
